I teach electric, acoustic and classical guitar from beginners up to grade 8 level and beyond.
I have been playing guitar for 30 years, teaching for 22 and have been an examiner for a major international examinations board since 2014. In that time I have helped hundreds of students as both a private tutor of adults and children and in mainstream schools as a peripatetic teacher to get the most from their guitar playing, and achieve results, whether from personal goals such as learning a song, performing to an audience or mastering a technique, to more formal qualifications like guitar grades 1-8 (RGT, Rockschool, Trinity, ABRSM), GCSE, BTEC and A level.
I teach all styles of guitar and plan my lessons to the individual student’s requirements. Everybody learns in a different way and my teaching methods revolve around this. Whether you want to understand every part of what you’re playing, or if you just want to strum some fun songs (you might want to do both…). Maybe you want to read music? TAB? Chord charts? Maybe you don’t want to read anything and play by ear and memory? All of the above?
I am an enthusiastic and positive teacher, and I am proud that 95% of the students I have entered for exams have achieved at least a Pass. Around 65-70% achieved a Merit or Distinction. I have taught all ages from 6 (I don’t recommend you start much younger than this) to retirees. As an examiner I have a direct insight into the requirements and assessment criteria for graded exams which will enable you to achieve excellence in your exam while feeling reassured and comfortable about the examination procedure.
Most people have a 1 hour lesson a week. Some younger children may benefit from a 30-45 minute lesson. Kids should have a regular lesson, every week. Adult learners may need to have lessons on a less formal basis due to other commitments, but I recommend regularity where possible, or taking a block of 6 -8 weeks of lessons as a course.
